Public health is becoming a pressing social concern for the global community, and it’s an issue Alfredo Palacio recognized years ago as Ecuador’s president. Palacio will visit WUSTL next week as part of Global Health Week and give an Assembly Series talk, “Government and Health Care: Perspectives from a President and a Physician,” at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in Graham Chapel on the Danforth Campus.

A Massachusetts law criminalizes peaceful expression on public sidewalks near reproductive health clinics, and the U.S. Supreme Court soon will determine its constitutionality. John Inazu, JD, First Amendment expert and WUSTL associate professor of law, said if that law stands, “the government can prohibit expression in a wide range of circumstances.”

The Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences offered a “speed dating” event of sorts to help graduate students meet faculty and learn about research before signing up for lab rotations. The School of Engineering & Applied Science will host environmental engineering students and faculty from Missouri and Illinois Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20-21, to learn the latest in environmental engineering technologies and to share research. The 18th Annual Mid-American Environmental Engineering Conference will be held in Brauer Hall.

WUSTL will test its emergency communication system, WUSTLAlerts, at noon Wednesday, Sept. 25. The test will take place unless there is the potential for severe weather or another emergency is occurring at that time. WUSTLAlerts will send emails to @wustl.edu addresses and text messages to cellphones.

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum has received a $36,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The grant will support a detailed conservation study of the 337 paintings in the museum’s permanent collection.
Marc Freedman, founder and CEO of Encore.org, will deliver a lecture about the role higher education can play in supporting adults looking for a career change later in life. The talk is at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Mildred E. Bastian Theatre, St. Louis Community College, Forest Park Campus. The Brown School and the Friedman Center for Aging are among the sponsors.
